Third Quarter Moon Meaning and Medicine
Why is the Moon Medicine?
The moon’s gravitational pull affects everything from the ocean’s tides, to certain insects/sea creatures/animals' life cycles, to the cycles of uteruses, to our sleep cycles.
Because we live so much of our lives in a rush, online, and detached, it deeply serves our biological need to connect with the earth and one another in honoring nature.
It offers us a chance to partake in the magic rituals, and ceremonies, and honor the earth and the stars that provide us with so much.
Take a moment, a few breaths, to honor the alchemy of the earth and the stars—the magic that makes up our insides, and the profound beauty that exists all around us.
Moon Phase Meanings
A Third Quarter Moon comes after the moon is full and making its way toward dark/new. This moon is the crone, she is older and wiser, and has seen everything.
Because of this, she has more patience and empathy in decision-making. She has more space to sit and observe her surroundings. She clears the way for what is to come.
The Medicine
Review what has come up during the full moon, whatever message of release or transformation, and go inward to discover how to integrate it into your body, mind, and daily life.
Wash away resentment, anger, and sadness (after fully feeling and naming the feels), figuratively and literally.
For example, forgiveness gives us back our power and vitality, gratefulness gives us back our magic and direction, and joy gives us back our time and health.
Journal on:
- Why you’d want to hang on to the poison, rather than the antidote?
- Notice the times you don’t feel the poison taking over - what are you doing, who are you with, where are you?
- How would it feel, what would you do, and how would your day-to-day change if you released the poison?
- At the same time, honor the fact that in nature, we often need a bit of poison in the antidote:
- Viper’s venom, if it enters the veins can cause coma or death, but is used for anti-clogging in blood.
- Pufferfish, if eaten can cause paralysis, but is used as a powerful pain medication in chemo right now.
- Viper’s venom, if it enters the veins can cause coma or death, but is used for anti-clogging in blood.
This means, it’s important to honor/feel the emotional root of our resentment, anger, and sadness (including the waves of emotion that occasionally visit us from time to time), but ultimately our tonic is allowing the medicine to take over.
More physical/literal ways you can wash away the old, unhelpful feels are to take action and plug up the small, daily energy drains - set a timer for five minutes to one hour and try one of the following:
- Make that doctor/dentist/eye appointment you’ve been putting off.
- Maybe you need to start with figuring out insurance!
- Maybe you need to start with figuring out insurance!
- Clean out that one cabinet/drawer that’s become tragically chaotic.
- Go through your subscriptions and see if there are any you can close out. Make room for the more aligned one you’ve been eyeing!
- Wash your makeup brushes.
- Summer: Rent/get out your bike/scooter/roller blades/paddle board.
- Winter: Try out the ice rink/snowshoe rental/cross country group.
- Different physical abilities? Align with what feels good/works for you: stretch/meditate/EFT (tapping).

- Clean out your car or purse/backpack/wallet.
Healing Mantra
In the release I allow myself to feel lighter.
In the detachment, I notice in my body where I feel stronger.
In the new space created I notice in my mind where I feel clearer.
On every blessed day, I’ve experienced this earth, I grow wiser from my mistakes.
I recognize I was learning how to love.
There is great beauty in my clumsiness.
I honor the sacredness of my becoming.
The earth, water, fire, air, and stars are love.
They are love.
I am love.
Love is all there is.
I am wrapped in love.
I love you, and I'm glad you're here,
